Thousands gather in Montreal to walk in solidarity with Paris

Crowds of mostly French people milled around Lafayette Square in the capital, adjacent to the White House and a deeply symbolic place – named after the famous Frenchman celebrated in the United States for his role in the war of independence.

The footage shows those at the vigil in NY singing the, La Marseillaise.

“France is in mourning, I did not sleep at night”.

News is still filtering in from Paris, where French authorities are investigating yesterday’s horrific massacre that has, at today’s count, left at least 127 people dead and hundreds more injured.

Philadelphia Flyers’ forward and Paris native Pierre-Edouard Bellemare attached a decal of France’s flag to his helmet before Saturday’s tilt against the the Carolina Hurricanes, and sang along to the French national anthem.

Politicians, diplomats, clergy and everyday people both French and Canadian took part in the somber procession.

“In adversity, we need to keep together and be strong together – not just in France, but in Europe and internationally,”she said. We are not going to let ourselves be swept away by hatred”, says Catherine Feuillet, France’s general consul in the city”.

People have gathered to mark the tragedy around the world and pay tribute to the lives lost outside French embassies and cultural institutes.
