That par putt on the final hole of El Camaleon Golf Club gave McDowell a 5-under 66 to finish at 18-under 266.

The playoff lasted one hole thanks to McDowell’s shot, which almost went in. She won the event two weeks ago in China for her third victory of the season and has wrapped up the tour’s rookie of the year award.

“It’s the result of three or four months of grinding”, McDowell said. “I want to be back up there, winning more major championships and winning more tournaments, so this is special”.

He then reached five-under for the day after a birdie at the par-five 13th.

Knox made a flying start to his round as the Scot, fresh from his win at the WGC-HSBC Champions, produced five birdies on the front nine.

“I drove the ball much, much better today than yesterday and putted just as good, really seeing these greens well, putting decisively and making a few”, he said.

Bohn, led the same tournament through 54 holes previous year but finished with a three-over 74 that left him tied for seventh.

McDowell was well short on a 12-foot birdie putt for the lead on the par-3 15th, and then he came up 10 feet short on a 45-foot birdie attempt on the next hole.

McDowell typically plays the European Tour this time of the year as it wraps up the Race to Dubai.

“I feel like I’ve got enough resources to pull on going into a weekend like this one”.

In an event that was extended by a day due to bad weather, Knox nearly holed an eagle chip at the 13th at the resumption, which only lasted three minutes due to the heavens opening above Playa del Carmen.

“I mean, if I had a 10-shot lead, that would be one thing, but one shot, that’s an even playing field tomorrow”. He said he’d try to maintain the same attitude on Sunday and not worry about what his rivals might be doing on a course where low rounds are certainly possible.
