Gardner replaces injured Gordon on AL All-Star roster

Brett Gardner’s journey from Holly Hill to walk-on at the College of Charleston to Yankees outfielder has now led the Lowcountry native to his 1st Major League All-Star game.

The announcement was made before the top of the fifth inning at Yankee Stadium and Gardner showed no emotion.

“I’ll be 32 years old next month and this will be my first All-Star Game, so I don’t know how many more chances I’ll get at it”, Gardner said. But when he returned to the dugout, he was greeted by hugs and fist bumps from his teammates. Teixeira was a replacement for injured Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera.

Gardner is currently a finalist for the Final Vote contest, in which fans can vote in the final member of each respective league’s roster.

Gordon, elected to start for the AL team, sustained a severe groin strain while tracking down a fly ball Wednesday night against Tampa Bay and is expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks. Voting ends Friday afternoon.
