Hewlett Packard Enterprise Places A Big Bet On Containers

In addition to HPE Helion Development Platform 2.0 support for Docker, HPE said it would provide support throughout a range of products for test, deployment and monitoring, plus support for Remote Docker Swarm cluster monitoring with HPE Sitescope.

HPE further burnishes its DevOps credentials by adding that Helion Development Platform 2.0 includes the Helion Code Engine, “a continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) service for automating the build, test and deploy workflow for code”.

ClusterHQ now boasts the support of no fewer than 13 storage vendors, a sizable crowd from which HPE hopes to stand out by extending Docker integration to the other parts of its extensive portfolio.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has aligned its offerings from application development to deployment to monitoring and management with Docker container technology. The solutions envelop cloud, software, storage and other services. “Not that containers are a new technology, but it’s relevant as enterprises look to a hybrid environment”.

Updates include support for 3D NAND drives, 3PAR Online Import software, and 3PAR Flash Acceleration for Oracle.

Then there’s HPE Codar for Docker, which has gained support for Dockerfile and image formats.

At a lower level, HPE is providing a Docker Machine plugin to enable deployment of container hosts from HPE’s OneView management platform, using the Composable Infrastructure APIs. HPE is also releasing several reference architectures for 3PAR StoreServ Storage that will help customers deploy the new unified systems. The idea is to free developers from software and infrastructure dependencies, cutting costs and creating efficiencies in the process.

“Developers today require a new model to build, ship and run distributed applications that existing infrastructures were not designed for”, said Nick Stinemates, VP, business development & technical alliances, Docker. It features tools for load-testing and application-performance monitoring, plus full transaction tracing across containerized and traditional backend systems and smart cloud-based load-testing.

HPE, the enterprise half of the company known until November 1 as Hewlett-Packard, used its first storage line refresh since the split to unveil the HPE 3Par Flash Acceleration for Oracle, a flash storage-based appliance targeting the acceleration of Oracle DB applications.

The labs will be located in Hewlett Packard Enterprise facilities in Houston, Texas, Grenoble, France and Singapore.

Reducing risk with flash- and app-integrated data protection HPE also announced new solutions to help customers as they move away from traditional backup silos in favor of flash array- and application-integrated data protection, including an entirely new lineup of entry and mid-range HPE StoreOnce Systems.
