After historic week, Missouri walks away with a win
“Golf, travel and spend time with family”. I know this works’. “I’ll certainly have those down the road”. In May and June, he received multiple treatments for his lymphoma.

“It’s a blood disease; there’s no cure for it”, Pinkel explained. “You manage it and deal with it”.
“I’ve said it before, but they should build a statue of Gary”, said Missouri State coach Dave Steckel, who worked under Pinkel as a defensive assistant for 18 seasons.
Here are five of the top candidates to watch in the upcoming search for Missouri athletic director Mack Rhoades, as well as a few wild cards to consider. “He’s helped me develop into a man. He’s taught me so many things that I will never ever be able to repay him for”. I didn’t want to be a distraction. I can sit here for dinner and get a phone call and be on the phone for the next three hours.
“I love what I do”.
“We were together through the whole entire thing – everybody on this team”, junior linebacker Michael Scherer said. “I want to commend Gary with how open he’s been with me the whole time, from the first day he came to my office in May and told me about the diagnosis, all the way to now and when he met with me personally on October 28 to tell me he’d made up his mind”. He will coach his final home game Saturday when the Tigers (5-5, 1-5 SEC) host Tennessee (6-4, 3-3). MU’s regular-season finale is November 27 at Arkansas.
However, if the Tigers had gone on to lose their game against BYU at Arrowhead Stadium, the narrative most likely would’ve switched to one of negativity and accusation.
News of his resignation was not supposed to be made public until a later date, Pinkel said. Prior to being hired at Missouri, Pinkel was Toledo’s head coach from 1991-2000. “He looked at me and said, “Coach, are you OK?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’m OK” and he came over, put his arms around me and told me he loved me”. “I’m very appreciative of them”.
With Pinkel’s blueprint, Mullen is 53-34 in six-plus seasons.
“It’s tough emotionally knowing that his fight with cancer is bringing his run to an end sooner than any of us thought”, Rhoades said. “I’ve blessed with my health”.
Missouri answered with arguably its two most important touchdowns of the season.
In 15 years, Pinkel transformed the Missouri program to respectability and led the team to 10 bowl games. He told Rhoades two days later.
His resignation was the latest in a string of events at Missouri to make national headlines that week.
The situation had become so emotional on campus that members of the football team even announced they would boycott team activities. But he did say his form of lymphoma is not as serious as a few others. It was about helping my players and supporting my players when they needed me.
“I know there was a lot of emotion for them in the preparation this week and I felt like they played hard”, Kaufusi said.
“That is probably what I am going to miss the most, just being around the players”, an emotional Pinkel said.

After Missouri held on to edge the Cougars 20-16, BYU senior tight end Remington Peck said he did notice a difference during the contest.
