OR spoils No. 7 Stanford’s playoff hopes with 38-36 win

In the late game, newly-ranked Washington State looks to continue its good run when the Cougars host Colorado in Pullman. Knight’s given 5 million to Stanford, too – but he’s not in the Cardinal’s corner. But through nine games, Stanford ranks first in the Pac-12 in total defense (338.7) and second in scoring defense (20.2).

We ll know more about the big-picture impact of the loss to OR when the playoff selection committee s rankings are released Tuesday.

DeForest Buckner and the OR defense had a big stand against the Cardinal offense (Eric Evans Photography). He understands the need for Cal to finally beat a good team, as he pointed out while noting the victor of Stanford-Oregon the past five years eventually won the Pac-12 title. That statement was made following a pass from Vernon Adams Jr.to freshman running back Taj Griffin on a swing route to make the score 35-23 Ducks while putting the pressure on Stanford to respond. Kevin Hogan completed 17 of 23 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns against one interception. “But when we have it we have to be efficient with it and take advantage of chances”.

And on Saturday night in Palo Alto, that’s exactly who the Ducks were. Hogan dropped the ball on the snap for the second time of the game allowing OR linebacker Tyson Coleman to recover the fumble giving OR the momentum back.

The Ducks could not capitalize with a touchdown off of the turnover as the Cardinal defense stepped up in the red zone.

Game time is 7:30 pm EDT and the game is on TV on FOX with announcers Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt and sideline reporter Molly McGrath.

Stanford, which leads the nation in time of possession, had the ball most of the game.

OR now leads 4-3 since 2009 after winning one that felt very much like a Game 7. Just in time for the Big 12. A win would be the Bears’ fifth in a row and would give them a chance at second place in the Pac-12, nearly guaranteeing them a spot and high ranking in the NCAA Tournament. It was Oregon’s first conference victory at Autzen Stadium this season after earlier losses to Utah and Washington State.

USC’s was led by two goals from Blake Edwards and one each for Lachlan Edwards, Milicevic and Morelli on a day when the Trojans’s high-powered offense was stopped in its tracks.

Before this past weekend, everyone looked at USC and OR as two underachieving teams for completely different reasons. The victor of this game has gone to the Pac-12 conference championship game four straight years. “He can make people miss in the open field and he can break tackles”. But the only game that Carrington has lost in his career is the game at home vs. Arizona. The best chance to pull the match on level terms came in the 52 minute, when sophomore midfielder Aravind Sivakumar took on his defender and sent a curling effort just inches wide of the far post. “I might have touched it a little bit”, Walker said. “We really appreciate the band coming out, it makes it great for these guys, they put in a lot of work and it’s for the school”.

With Adams healthy after being slowed early this season by a broken right index finger, the Ducks showed off the high-powered offense they’ve been accustomed to in recent years. It’s not Helfrich’s policy to talk about injuries, but Frost did.

With their victory, OR has something to play for and they’ll be at home. Players kept fighting through adversity. The over is 6-1 in Stanford’s last 7 games against a team with a winning record.
