Typhoon Nangka is currently heading for the southern coast of Japan.

Typhoon Nangka is expected to hold its intensity as it passes through the northern part of the CNMI, according to the Weather Service.

A southwesterly airstream will affect the south China coast early next week. And to the right of that is Typhoon Nankga, east of Guam.

No storm signal warnings have been issued so far.

“Three storms passing within 200 miles past year was unprecedented, and to get a fourth one, that just piles on”, said Masters. A typhoon watch remains in effect for Agrihan, Pagan and Alamagan in the northern Marianas islands. As this storm moves to the west-northwest the next several days it could possibly grow to category 5 storm by Thursday. That would make the fourth Category 5-equivalent super typhoon of what’s already been a busy season. At 3 p.m. Monday, Nangka was packing sustained 81-mph winds and 98-mph gusts.

As of 2pm, Linfa was centered 240km west of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), moving northwest at a speed of 7kph.

A sea warning could be issued in the morning, followed by a land warning in the afternoon, forecasters said, adding that the typhoon could have a significant impact on northern Taiwan.

NASA’s Aqua satellite provided a bird’s eye view of Tropical Storm Linfa as it was approaching the southeastern China coast on July 8.

As of 12 p.m., its center was still in the South China Sea, about 280 km southeast of Shantou City, Guangdong. This could threaten Japan eventually. Much could change in the coming days.

El Niño events tend to increase the amount of storminess in areas just north and south of the equator, and these tropical thunderstorms, if given the right encouragement from the atmosphere, can start to organize, take on a few rotation and intensify into a fledgling tropical cyclone. If it does become a named storm, it will be called Nangka, Malaysian for jackfruit.
