Modi-Sharif meet in Russia is good step, says J&K CM

Leaders of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are meeting this week in Ufa, Russia.

Modi is in Ufa to attend the seventh BRICS summit and the 15th SCO summit.

Russia, now holding the annual presidency in BRICS, attaches great importance to the development of interaction with BRICS member states and considers these relationships a foreign policy priority.

The summit is a showcase for Russian President Vladimir Putin, and comes at a time when Moscow’s ties with the West are strained because of the Ukraine crisis.

A meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi is underway in Ufa, Russian Federation on the sidelines of the regional summit. “Expectations include supporting Russia’s longstanding view of necessity to deepen BRICS’ cooperation with practicalities of… enhancing ties in all areas of social, economic and political life through outreach with involvement of different stakeholders”. Putin said the two nations could overcome their countries’ difficulties by working together. “Financial markets are unstable”, the prime minister noted as he advocated the need for tapping the “unique” strengths that each member country of the BRICS and developing linkages.

Also on Wednesday, President Xi met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their fifth meeting in a year.

Reportedly, the agenda of the meeting is discussion on the issues that escalated heated exchange of statements from both sides.

“We also welcome any steps that both countries can take to try to reduce the tensions”. “We can tap our strengths like skill development”, he said, while pitching for a framework for development.

On update on BBC report claiming Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) receiving funding from Indian authorities, the Spokesman said the Pakistan government was in touch with the British authorities and a response was awaited.
