WBO strips Mayweather of welterweight title

Floyd Mayweather has officially been stripped of the WBO welterweight belt he took from Manny Pacquaio in May.

The boxing organization does not allow boxers to hold world titles in multiple weight classes at the same time. According the organization’s rules, a fighter can not hold titles in different weight classes in different organizations. Following the May 2 fight Mayweather had even suggested he was planning to vacate all of his titles to give younger fighters a chance.

The WBO president, Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, said last week that if Mayweather did not comply with the established rules and meet Friday’s deadling he would have the title stripped from him.

“I think the WBO championship committee behaved fairly before taking away his crown”.

“It’s a complete disgrace”, Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com. “Floyd will decide what, or if any, actions he will take”. He has also said he would like that fight not to be a title bout.

Contrary to earlier reports, Floyd WILL also receive a belt from the WBO to recognise his short reign as champion and it’s widely expected Bradley will be upgraded to “full” WBO 147 lb champion later this week.

After all that, Floyd Mayweather might have got nothing from the “fight of the century”… except hundreds of millions of dollars.

In the meantime, Timothy Bradley Jr. has replaced Mayweather as WBO’s champion.
