There has been little love lost between Williams and the Nets for most of the last two seasons, and it was no secret around the National Basteball Association that both sides would be more than happy to have a fresh start before the beginning of next season, as the Nets have been anxious to try and dramatically cut – if not eliminate entirely – their luxury tax bill for this coming season, according to multiple sources. He is scheduled to make $21 million next season.
Nevertheless, the chances of Williams, who averaged 13.0 points and 6.6 assists while shooting a career-low 38.7 percent last season, being traded with two years and over $43 million remaining on his contract always has been extremely unlikely.
The Brooklyn Nets and point guard Deron Williams are in talks so the three-time All-Star can have his contract bought out and sign with the Dallas Mavericks, reports ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.
A lot must happen for Williams to end up with Dallas, but the Mavericks are ready to pounce if the opportunity presents itself. Sources say there is strong mutual interest now, though, between Williams and the Mavericks to come together to try to help each other, provided he becomes a free agent.

Because of Williams’s salary, the Nets do not want to just release him, even though it would allow them to pay what is owed to Williams over the next five seasons. And although Billy King said “no” when asked about a Deron Williams buyout early in the summer, insiders believe a buyout is the ultimate solution. However, he grew up in Dallas, and as an added draw his ex- Jazz teammate Wesley Matthews is now a Maverick player. The point guard is reportedly hoping to land with the Dallas Mavericks if he does hit the open market. Barea. Meanwhile the Brooklyn Nets are trying hard to get away from the extensive luxury tax penalties that the team will incur unless it deals away some of the big contracts. It would be pretty easy for the team to take on another contract, especially if it meant giving the roster some immediate star power.
