Two Tennessee teachers are among 108 teachers nationally to receive the 2015 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Susan Abrams has taught mathematics at the school for 15 years. The Presidential Award is the nation’s highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science (including computer science). Sarah Vann is a teacher at the Owasso 8 Grade Center.
The award is given annually to K-12 science and math teachers across the country.
“The Presidential Award is validation and recognition for those teachers who reflect on their practice and strive to continually learn and improve upon it”, said Robin O’Brien, a secondary schools math teacher in Palm Beach County, Fla., per the Sun Sentinel. The educators will receive their awards at an event later this summer.
The winners are selected by a panel of scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial nomination process done at the state level.

“Competence in STEM, especially proficiency in mathematics and science gained in grades K-12, forms the foundation of an educated, capable, and technical future workforce”, said Adrian Talley, DoDEA’s principal deputy director and associate director for education. “It also causes me to reflect on all of the great teachers, school leaders, and students that have had an impact on me as a professional, as well as a person”.
