Spieth stumbles in 1st round of John Deere Classic

The PGA of America is moving its Grand Slam of Golf from Donald Trump’s golf course in Los Angeles, the first significant fallout for golf from the Republican presidential candidate’s comments on Mexican immigrants. That experience helped shape his decision to play his way onto the Tour.

“When you’re not feeling quite as good, it’s a little bit harder to get excited and motivated to do things”, Stricker said. “And so far he’s got me beat pretty handily in professional golf”.

Spieth, ranked No. 2 in the world and playing his first competitive round since winning the U.S. Open last month, shot an even-par 71 and will have to hustle to make the cut Friday.

“I’m keeping it in the fairway, at least trying to, and just giving myself some good opportunities”, said Pinckney. “It’s advantageous for me to try and win this week and to get any kind of momentum I can into the Open Championship”.

“These greens are in such good shape and I’m rolling the ball really well”.

Fellow Americans Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar and Jimmy Walker are all playing in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at nearby Gullane this week, while Spieth contests the first PGA Tour title he won in 2013 in Illinois.

Despite opening the tournament well, sitting four under through the first 32 holes, Wie fell short of her goal, missing the cut at 1-under for the week.

Thomas’ strong showing was particularly impressive in the context of his recovery from a nightmare end to the Greenbrier Classic last week.

Thomas, who had an early start, had three straight pars from 10. He also tied for eighth in the Players Championship in May.
