Facebook is making it easier to declutter your news feed

The site will make suggestions for pages you might like to follow based on who you now follow. Many habitual Facebook users actually have a shortage of content, according to Mosseri. Posts from accounts that have been prioritized will also include a star to remind you that you have opted-in to seeing more of their posts.

The Facebook News Feed is a crucial part of the hugely successful social network. This was possible before, but the new setting makes it much simpler and faster; just scroll through and check off all the people you don’t want to hear from in your News Feel.

Combined, these tools give you an unprecedented level of control over your Facebook experience and can combat some of the mistakes and quirks of Facebook’s News Feed algorithms. It makes it super easy for you to discover and connect to the artists, news outlets, and businesses you like.

As someone whose own news feed has gotten rather unruly over the years, this seems like a pretty smart way of dealing with the digital baggage longtime Facebook users have accrued over the years.

When it comes to prioritization, you can select which friends and Pages you want to see at the top of you News Feed.

This new feature will be available today on iOS and is expected to roll out on Android and desktops “over the coming weeks”, Facebook said. There are ways to tell Facebook what you like or dislike – you can hide posts or mark a friend as “close” – but even those didn’t guarantee you will or will not see something the next time you visit the service. In November, the company gave users the ability to edit news from a person or page. Those friends’ posts will then appear above the algorithmically ranked news feed. You can come back at any time to update your choices. You can do that with anyone else, too, by accessing a list of the top people, pages, and groups you’ve seen over the last week and hacking away.

The unfollow feature allows you to stay friends with someone, without ever having to see their latest photos, status updates or inane Candy Crush posts. “But what we’re learning from these surveys is there are other things we need to know about what you care about that don’t necessarily mean you clicked the link or liked the post”.
