Another day, another watch list: Penn State’s Jordan Lucas, Anthony Zettel

Blake Martinez was named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list and Joshua Garnett earned a spot on the Outland Trophy watch list, the Football Writers Association of America announced Friday. This is the second major award watch list that Boehm has landed on this summer after being named to the Rimington Watch List Wednesday.

Penn State defensive tackle Anthony Zettel, who’s expected to have a big season in 2015, has found himself on yet another preseason award watch list. He totaled 88 tackles, including eight for a loss.

The West Monroe native set a school record with 230 interception return yards and also added seven pass break ups and three forced fumbles. On the offensive end, Jack carried the ball 28 times for 113 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Butler, meanwhile, had 56 total tackles previous year with 13.5 tackles for a loss as the Bulldogs’ top interior lineman. His 58 stops in 2014 ranked third on the team and his nine pass breakups ranked among the best in the Big Ten.

Boehm started all 14 games a season ago, anchoring an offensive line that was a key cog in an 11-3 season and a second consecutive SEC East Championship.

Woods, a first-team All-Conference US safety, finished second on the team with 71 tackles.

Maddy earned honorable mention All-ACC honors from both the league’s coaches and ACSMA despite playing in just four games a year ago. His best performance came in the Hokies’ win over rival Virginia in which he had six tackles and two sacks. Five days later three Outland Trophy finalists will be named by the FWAA.

Last year’s Outland Trophy victor was Iowa offensive tackle Brandon Scherff.

Penn State has had one Outland Trophy victor in its history.

Zettel is a nominee for the Bednarik Award for the National Defensive Player of the Year and claimed preseason first-team All-America accolades from Phil Steele. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary player from Minnesota who then went on to become a star for professional football’s Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Ohio State’s Randy Gradishar, a member of the FWAA’s 1973 All-America team and a College Football Hall of Famer, will be honored. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. He was also one of 12 semifinalists for the Lombardi Award (college lineman of the year) and one of 20 quarterfinalists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy.

Santos-Knox is also up for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which highlights the best defensive player in the nation and is chosen by the Maxwell Football Club.
