LeBron Signs 2-year Contract with Cavaliers

LeBron James’ signature is on the piece of paper keeping him a Cavalier for at least one more season, with many likely to follow.

As noted by Ball Don’t Lie, such a deal makes financial sense for someone like James, as the NBA’s nine-year $24 billion broadcast rights deal will raise the salary cap significantly, and could bump James’ annual income to $30 million when he signs his next deal.

Just shy of the one-year anniversary of his celebrated homecoming, James agreed to terms on a two-year, $47 million contract for next season, two people familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press on Thursday. The Cavs announced Thursday that they also had re-signed guard Iman Shumpert, who said last week that he meant to re-sign with the team.

Earlier this week point guard Mo Williams said he had agreed a deal with the Cavs which would see him reunite with James.

Tonight he’s hosting a red-carpet event for his new movie “Trainwreck” in Akron.

“LeBron’s re-signing today is a reflection and continuation of his strong, personal commitment to help deliver championships to Northeast Ohio and Cavs fans everywhere”, general manager David Griffin said in a release. His impact upon this team, his community and the game are impossible to overstate and we look forward to continuing on our mission together. But on the first day teams could sign players, James made his intentions known to the Cavs. Love signed a five-year, $113 million deal to stay with the Cavaliers. The 6-8 forward scored in double figures in all 69 games, increasing his consecutive double-digit scoring streak to 641 (third-longest streak in National Basteball Association history).

Williams, a 12-year veteran, spent parts of three seasons with Cleveland from 2008-2011, where he averaged 16.2 points, 5.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 33.6 minutes and was selected a 2009 National Basteball Association All-Star.

In 777 career games, including 511 starts, Williams has averaged 13.4 points, 5.0 assists and 2.8 rebounds, shot 43.4 percent from the field, 37.9 percent from three-point range and made 87 percent of his free-throw attempts.
