Red Wings, Gustav Nyquist agree to four-year deal

The Detroit Red Wings announced Friday that forward Gustav Nyquist and the team agreed to terms on a four-year contract. The actual annual salary breaks down to: $4 million, $4.25 million, $5.25 million and $5.5 million. He appeared in all 82 games for Detroit a year ago, notching 27 goals and 54 points.

The Red Wings will have a key part of their future locked up for the forseeable future.

Considering Nyquist’s last two seasons, that isn’t surprising.

The Red Wings have two more restricted free agents to sign – forwards Tomas Jurco and Teemu Pulkkinen.

With this new deal, the 25-year-old becomes the third highest-paid forward in Detroit, behind Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. He was tied for third in the league with 14 power-play goals. Nyquist’s contract puts the Wings at $71.9 million, about $500,000 over the cap, but teams can be 10% over until the day before the season begins.

Since making his debut during the 2011-12 season, Nyquist has 115 points (59 goals, 56 assists) in 179 games, all with the Red Wings.

Nyquist is a 2008 Red Wings draft pick (121st overall) who has played just one full season with the team – this past season. “He is just now entering the prime of his career”.
