More food, volunteers needed for Thanksgiving dinner

Started in 1984 as a hot meal to those experiencing homelessness, limited resources, or isolation, the Tallahassee Community Thanksgiving Celebration has provided much more than a meal to the thousands of folks who have been served over the past 30 years.

This year, the group hoped to offer shoes for the homeless, volunteer Shirley Williams said, but the recent death of the nonprofit’s chairwoman Cary Brown has made organizing the event more hard. Walmart provided funds for the stuffing; Powell’s Food Fair, the green beans; McDonald’s, tea, cups and paper products; AEP Mountaineer plant, paper plates; Tudor’s, take-out containers; and Bob Evans, rolls and butter.

Festivities for the day include entertainment and a traditional Turkey Dinner. Meals can be delivered as well by calling the aforementioned phone numbers.

The Thanksgiving Day dinner at the New Haven Lutheran Church will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until the food is gone, according to organizer Holly Lieving.

Church members donate about 10 turkeys and usually 20 a few pies. Our church really believes in giving to our community.
