Alabama will face Charleston Southern this week, which on the surface sounds like it should be an easy win for the Tide.

Former St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey city, N.J.) cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick is unlikely to suit up Saturday when the Alabama Crimson Tide take on Charleston Southern, according to head coach Nick Saban. When talking about the Crimson Tide’s upcoming matchup, Saban recalled a 2011 matchup with the Georgia Southern Eagles where the Eagles, who also ran the option, made things uncomfortable for Alabama. “And I think that team won a national championship but I’m not sure”, Saban told reporters. “We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to get him back after this week”. Charleston Southern, which clinched the Big South title with an eighth straight victory last week over Liberty, is 0-16 all-time against FBS opponents. That’s like 30 yards a game.

The 9-1 Buccaneers have been incredibly proficient running the option this season, something that worries Saban. The defense has been outstanding, holding opponents to 2.49 yards per carry and forcing 20 turnovers, including an SEC-best 14 interceptions.
