Calling the legislation,”untenable”, a statement from the Obama Administration said the House legislation would not increase national security but would “create significant delays and obstacles in the fulfillment of a vital program that satisfies both humanitarian and national security objectives”. “So we think the prudent, the responsible thing is to take a pause in this particular aspect of this refugee program in order to verify that terrorists are not trying to infiltrate the refugee population”.

“We don’t make good decisions if it’s based on hysteria or an exaggeration of risks”, he added, speaking from Manila.

“They are scared of widows and orphans coming into the United States of America”.

“Our nation has always been welcoming, but we can not let terrorists take advantage of our compassion”, Ryan, R-Wis., told reporters after a closed House GOP meeting.

“This is a moment where it’s better to be safe than to be sorry”, he said. With Democrats, however, 46% would continue the program while 36% would shut it down.

MI Republican Gov. Rick Snyder found it helpful to “hear in much greater detail the work that has happened on the screening and security procedures and process”, spokeswoman Sara Wurfel said.

Bush later clarified he wants to give preference to Christians but not exclude properly vetted Muslims.

More than four million Syrians have fled their homeland since the war began. He said these Syrian refugees are “young, single, males, as opposed to family members”.

That slow pace is due largely to the comprehensive screening process that is conducted in refugee camps in Egypt, Jordan and Turkey, which takes 18 to 24 months.

Many high-profile Democratic mayors, including Boston’s Marty Walsh, Houston’s Annise Parker and Baltimore’s Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, now find themselves in states governed by politicians who want to keep refugees from crossing their borders.

It was not clear what practical effect state-level opposition would have on administration policy. Immigrants without children or otherwise not eligible for the temporary assistance program qualify for the refugee cash assistance program run by the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement.
