This year’s flu vaccine less effective than previously thought
State Department of Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf said Sussex County was hit hard early on in last year’s flu season. The two men live in central Iowa and were between 41 and 60 years of age, but no other information has been released because of medical privacy law. The CDC says Iowa, OR and Rhode Island now have the highest influenza activity. It’s particularly unsafe to babies, young children, pregnant women and the elderly, as well as people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.

Today is the last day you can get a flu vaccine at an Ottawa Public Health flu clinic.
Health officials are advising Iowans to get the flu vaccine.
Flu symptoms may include fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and body aches. Scientists have to make an “educated guess” regarding which strains of the flu virus will be circulating, and they develop a vaccine based on these hypotheses.
By the close of the day on Friday November 6, North Yorkshire community pharmacies had vaccinated 5,168 people – an increase of 200.3 per cent on a year ago, catering for a growing demand.
“This year they’ve been matching all of the viruses they’ve seen in the northern hemisphere, and those all seem to be very good matches to the vaccine”, Quinlisk said. In this case, the vaccine offered poor protection against flu infection caused by one particular subtype of virus: A(H3N2).

Dr Gill Richardson, Director of Public Health at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, said: “The flu vaccination can prevent serious illness and is safe and effective”. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by viruses. The suit also states that state legislatures have been considering adding the flu shot to the required vaccinations list, but have continuously voted against it.
