McCrory Gets Lawmaker Support for Refugee Stance

“I am now requesting the president [Barack Obama] and federal government cease sending refugees from Syria to North Carolina”, McCrory stated.

Gov. McCrory made the announcement Monday in Charlotte.

“We have an act of war going on that could come to our country”, McCrory said.

North Carolina is now home to 59 Syrian refugees, according to McCrory. A White House official said the administration remained “steadfastly committed” to President Barack Obama’s plan to resettle at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the U.S.in the coming year, saying officials have determined that can be done “safely (and) consistent with our national security”.

A recent survey by the group found that 46 percent of Americans say immigrants are a burden on the country while 56 percent believe the values of Islam are at odds with American values.

Soerens said terrorists claiming to be refugees is a great way to double-victimize the refugees they already uprooted.

The committee also asked about personnel decisions involving a Forsyth system teacher now leading the North Carolina Association of Educators.

A few North Carolina lawmakers want the Department of Health and Human Services to move ahead with pending mergers of local mental health agencies, although the agency’s head has called for a pause while details of a long-term Medicaid overhaul are decided.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina legislators are back in Raleigh to question Gov. Pat McCrory’s administration about prison maintenance contracts and to talk to UNC Board of Governors leaders.

McCrory said Wednesday that he welcomes a dialogue with the President about security concerns around refugee admissions.

Critics accused McCrory of “fear-mongering”.

Another voice speaking out against the governors’ anti-refugee reactions is that of Farris Barakat, whose brother Deah was shot to death in Chapel Hill earlier this year in what appeared to be an anti-Muslim hate crime.

“This is potential terrorism actually, that we are concerned about at this point in time”, said McCrory. But the enemy is not the Syrian refugee families and their children, struggling for a peaceful life. “We’re fighting the same enemy”. The state resettled more refugees from Burma than any other country.
