The platform also uses predictive analytics to forsee whether a particular trend is a fleeting fad or if it will remain strong.

In a press release on Wednesday, IBM detailed the mobile app, which it says “distills the sentiment of tens of millions of online conversations by scouring 10,000 sources across social media sites, blogs, forums, comments, ratings and reviews”.

Unlike other apps or lists that provide a static ranking of “hot” products, the Watson app reveals how consumers feel about the products they are considering or have purchased.

Watson’s natural language and machine learning technologies reveal insights about top holiday trends and products after studying the distinct groups based on content, context and sentiment. The idea behind Watson Trend is to give consumers the trends, product stories and buyer thoughts to help people shop smarter. For instance, IBM forecasts that for the Thanksgiving holiday more consumers will turn to their mobile devices to seek best deals. Mobile sales are expected to increase more than 36%, up 34% as compared to 2014, Watson app predicts.

In the future, IBM said the IBM Watson Trend will continue to evolve with the addition of new capabilities including geographic and language data, and an increased level of personalization that caters to each consumer’s unique interests and preferences. By doing so, Watson is able to determine the general reaction to any product, as well as whether or not that reaction is trending upward or downward.
