Governor Dannel Malloy chose to focus on the drop in the unemployment rate in commenting on the numbers.

Minneapolis-St. Paul’s metro area, and Duluth, have gained jobs in the past 12 months.

The department said Thursday in its monthly statewide unemployment report that the state added a net 14,400 jobs in October.

The contradictory report stems from a reliance on estimates derived from separate surveys: unemployment is calculated from a residential survey, while job losses and gains come from businesses.

“We can now say with certainty that the New Jersey economy has turned an important corner”, James Wooster, chief economist for the Department of the Treasury, said in a prepared statement. A year ago, the NY rate was 5.9 percent.

Other Services, Professional and Business Services and Government were the sectors gaining the most in October.

Leisure and hospitality – which includes hotels and restaurants – shed 2,300 jobs on the month in Minnesota.
