Nicki Minaj recites Maya Angelou’s poem Still I Rise at benefit

Minaj isn’t typically associated with poetry, but she showed that the Maya Angelou poem contained lyrics with special meaning for her. “You may tread me in the very dirt, but still, like dust, I’ll rise”. “You can tell it hits home”, one fan commented on the video.

John Legend, Sia, Alicia Keys, Ed Sheeran, Zac Brown Band and Miguel joined Minaj for the concert benefit, put on by A&E, to address the ongoing racial conflicts in the country and raise money for the nonprofit organization, United Way Worldwide. In addition, a speech by Morgan Freeman honored those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in Paris, mourning those who lost their lives while seeking to create unity in the nation.

Jill Scott delivered the night’s most captivating performance, crooning “Strange Fruit”, the protest song popularized by Billie Holiday, in front of giant screens displaying imagery of lynching.
