Britain’s Foreign Office has also warned schools in the United Kingdom to follow the advice on the French Ministry of Education’s website and cancel all trips to France until Sunday.

Although the cancellations don’t specifically include foreign school parties, the French Ministry of Education has advised foreign school groups to avoid travelling to France until at least next week.

For British citizens already in France, the Foreign Office warns: “You should be vigilant in public places, follow the advice of the local authorities and subscribe to email alerts for updates to this travel advice”.

French education chiefs have ordered a ban on all national school trips and now the British Government has told its schools they should also scrap their plans. David Hampson, from the Tollbar Academy, said during an interview on BBC Radio 5 said that he cancelled the visit to Paris in the interest of the safety for students but with great regret.

Tolbar Academy in Grimsby was due to take 96 Year 7 pupils to St Omer on a French and history trip, one on Thursday and the other a week later.

He said the school is hopeful of a full reimbursement from the insurance company, but will ensure that, either way, all parents involved are repaid the £285 cost of the trip in full.
