Blackhawks trade Patrick Sharp to Stars for Trevor Daley, Ryan Garbutt | National Hockey League

Together, Daley and Garbutt will count $5.1 million against the cap over the next two seasons, but ESPN’s Craig Custance reports that the Stars will retain half of Garbutt’s remaining contract.

The Chicago Blackhawks made a surprising trade, sending Patrick Sharp and Stephen Johns to Dallas for defenseman Trevor Daley and forward Ryan Garbutt.

“On behalf of the entire Blackhawks organization, I’d like to thank Patrick for all that he helped our franchise accomplish during his time in Chicago, especially serving an integral role in bringing us three Stanley Cup championships”, Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a statement.

With the massive contracts given to captain Jonathan Toews and forward Patrick Kane, the Blackhawks were facing some serious cap concerns going into the new season. He signed with the Blackhawks prior to the 2014-15 season after spending four years at Notre Dame.

Daley, 31, recorded career highs with 16 goals, 22 assists and 38 points in 68 regular-season games past year with the Stars.

Sharp, who has a $5.9 million USA salary-cap charge for the next two seasons, is coming off a disappointing campaign, mustering only 43 points, his lowest output in a full season since 2006-07 (35 points). He has been a part of two Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks and has played in 287 regular-season games over the last five seasons. The Winnipeg native added 15 points in 23 Stanley Cup playoff contests.

“Stephen adds to the corps of young defensemen that we have coming up in our system”, said Stars’ GM Jim Nill. His 756 career regular-season games are the second-most by a defenseman wearing a Dallas Stars sweater and his 231 points (67-164=231) are fourth-most by a blueliner since the team moved to Dallas.

Sharp scored 16 goals and recorded 27 assists for the Blackhawks in 68 regular season games this past season. In 2013-14, he had 78 points (34 goals) in 82 regular-season games.

The 6-foot-3, 229-pound native of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania was originally selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 National Hockey League Draft.

Johns, a second round pick in the 2010 draft, scored 21 points in 51 games for Chicago’s AHL affiliate in Rockford. “He brings an element of size and physicality to our mix and we look forward to him coming in and competing”. Garbutt had been with Dallas since 2011 and recorded 70 points in 198 career games across four seasons. The strong leadership he displayed both in the locker room and in the North Texas community has created a lasting impact on everyone around him.
