VW announced the “Goodwill package” offer to owners Monday.

The $500 Visa gift card can be used anywhere, while the $500 voucher can be used at a VW dealership for things such as an oil change or new set of tires, or even a down payment on a new vehicle.

Customers will also get access to a free 24-hour roadside assistance program for three years.

To find out if you qualify for the TDI Goodwill Program, you can visit VWDieselInfo.com and enter the VIN of your vehicle. Customers won’t be required to sign a release of claims in order to receive the package, said VW spokesman Darryll Harrison Jr.

Calling it a “goodwill package”, VW hopes this is the first step in regaining the trust of its customers. Individuals accepting the offer will not have to relinquish their right to participate in a class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen.

German authorities said on Wednesday that they have measured excessive levels of exhaust emissions in several manufacturers’ vehicles, in a revelation that could see the scandal around Volkswagen grow to encompass other firms. The company said that criminal proceedings can’t be ruled out, depending on the findings, and that employees could be transferred or given other responsibilities. Once you get the cards from VW, you then need to drive your affected 2.0-liter TDI vehicle over to a VW dealer, who can activate the cards.

“I personally feel insulted by their peace offering”, Nevada resident Dave Thompson, who owns a 2010 diesel Jetta sportswagon, told CNN.

“We are working tirelessly to develop an approved remedy for affected vehicles”, Michael Horn, VW’s U.S. CEO, said in a statement. The EPA suggests approximately 10,000 vehicles were sold with the offending engines in the United States of America market.VW’s emissions scandal began in September, causing the company’s stock price to plunge.

Volkswagen has said it is already in high-level negotiations with the affected European countries to reach a settlement on taxation losses from the Carbon dioxide cheat.
