When the USA women’s soccer team ride floats through the swirling ticker tape to a ceremony at City Hall, they will be the first national team since 1984 and the first women’s team ever to be honored with the iconic parade. As she passed on the floats, the crowd erupted in cheers.

“This is so inspiring”, gushed Alexandra Midgette, 13, of Bethpage, NY. “With the amount of coverage, with social media, with everything else that’s been going on, I think there was no greater time to win a World Cup than now….” “It’s my first parade, and I’m happy to be a part of it”.

Along with the kids came the requisite soccer moms.

“It means a lot to me”, said Sidney Francis, an American transplant from Antigua, after the parade had passed and the confetti had collected underfoot. She then attended the University of North Carolina, moving the team to National Championships in 2003 and 2006.

“Not a problem, you know, it’s something we’re used to”.

“This is historic”, she added.

But McCray’s not getting discouraged any time soon-in fact, she’s pushing harder for women to get what they deserve.

There were men among the spectators as well – seeking inspiration of another sort.

On a glorious July morning, the 23-member squad that defeated Japan 5-2 before a record-breaking USA television audience Sunday became the first women’s sports team bestowed with a parade along a stretch of Lower Manhattan where millions have cheered On soldiers, kings, astronauts, the Yankees and Giants.
