Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy went from missing most of the 2015 National Football League season to sitting out just a quarter of it.
The charges were dismissed in February, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell deemed in a letter to Hardy that there was sufficient evidence to levy a suspension for personal conduct violations. For what it’s worth, Kessler also represented Tom Brady in his recent Deflategate suspension appeal.
Independent arbitrator Harold Henderson heard the appeal and ruled for upholding the suspension – albeit in reduced fashion.
Last summer, Hardy was convicted of two counts of domestic violence against his ex- girlfriend in North Carolina.
Hardy’s appeal focused on the argument that the punishment doesn’t fit what was outlined by the personal conduct policy at the time of the incident.
Hardy appealed the suspension in May on the grounds that the 10-game figure was a knee-jerk reaction from the league to counter the negative criticism of its weak handling of domestic violence offenses and that there was no precedent for the punishment when it was handed down. Hardy played one game with the Carolina Panthers in 2014, before he was placed on the inactive list for one week and the commissioner’s exempt list for the remainder of the season. There is a strong chance Bell’s suspension gets reduced to two games, but fans also shouldn’t hold their breath.

Hardy could pursue a further reduction by taking the case to court, though it’s unclear if he will pursue legal action.
