ANC came first but I was speaking as party leader

But DA leader Mmusi Maimane, in support of his MP, was also unimpressed and stood up to demand Zuma to demand: “Can the ANC (which is in financial troubles as a party) afford to pay for Nkandla?” – an apparent reference to the scandal over state funds spent in upgrading the President’s village home in Nkandla in KwaZulu/Natal Province which remains a contentious issue in court.

Mr Zuma’s reply was: “When I speak to ANC members I speak to ANC members”.

Zuma told MPs the ANC came into being long before a democratic South Africa.

The ANC, however, told theCitizen that there wasn’t a succession debate going on within the party. The question came in the wake of Zuma’s comments at the recent ANC KwaZulu-Natal conference that the ANC came first. “It fought all the time until it liberated South Africa… and the ANC is taking South Africa to its prosperity”, he added. But, I know no other life than life in the ANC. The ANC is my life.

In Parliament on Thursday, Mr Zuma called democratic SA the brainchild of the ANC when questioned about these remarks by EFF MP Hlengiwe Maxon. South Africans have been advised to spend wisely and avoid taking on more debt. “Democracy is a child of the ANC. You best not forget that”, said Zuma.
