The American was identified as Ezra Schwartz, 18, who was studying in Israel, according to a Facebook post by the American Jewish Committee.

Schwartz, who was from the Boston suburb of Sharon, loved sports and was a very active, energetic kid, Niedober said.

The attacks are part of a wave of violence which began in mid-September amid tensions surrounding a holy site in Jerusalem which is sacred to Jews and Muslims.

He was killed yesterday afternoon when an assailant opened fire from a vehicle near a Jewish settlement block south of Jerusalem before crashing into pedestrians. For the Palestinians, lack of 3G service has been a sore point and, they said, a symbol of how the Israeli occupation has held them back.

Palestinian youths set fire to tires along border areas, with Israeli soldiers opening fire in the al-Shujaiyeh neighborhood and east of al-Bureij refugee camp. Palestinians have frequently been unlawfully killed when they posed no direct threat to life. He then tried to attack a group of men at prayer in a makeshift synagogue, but was blocked, witnesses said. She said he was a Palestinian father of five from the West Bank village Dura, near Hebron, a frequent flashpoint for violence. It was not immediately clear how Schwartz was killed, by the vehicle or gunshots.

In a statement released on November 17, the Palestinian Health Ministry said two Palestinians have on average lost their lives and 200 others have been injured on a daily basis since the start of October. Five others were wounded.

The shooting in Gush Etzion came hours after two Israeli men died in a stabbing attack in a store in Tel Aviv. The attacker was arrested by Israeli forces. Numerous Palestinians killed have been alleged attackers, while others have been shot in clashes with Israeli security forces.

Mr Netanyahu said Israel would “settle accounts” with the perpetrators, exact a price from their families and destroy their homes.

He admitted to using a recently obtained work permit to enter Tel Aviv with the sole intention of killing Jews, Haaretz reported.

“The army will continue to take all legal steps available to it against the attackers and their accomplices in order to ensure security for the residents of the State of Israel”, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said after that raid.
