EPA says VW cheating software may be on more vehicles
“EPA and CARB will continue to investigate and will take all appropriate action”, an EPA spokesperson said in a written statement.

During a meeting on Thursday, VW and Audi officials told the EPA that the issues extend to all 3.0-liter diesel engines from model years 2009 through 2016.
An investigation by the EPA found the cars emit up to 40 times the allowable amount of harmful nitrogen oxide while being driven.
“Figuring out where the VW diesels are and are likely to go is a key part of addressing this problem”, said Ethan Sprague, vice president of sales and business development at Kevala.
Volkswagen has acknowledged to federal and state regulators that it used “defeat devices” on tens of thousands of additional diesel cars to circumvent air-pollution regulations, officials said Friday. The EPA and CARB now will review the proposal, the statement said.
“The most unfortunate aspect of this news, in addition to the environmental harm, is that it slows VW’s ability to move beyond the negative headlines and start the rebuilding process”, Karl Brauer, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book, said in an email.
During the meeting, the automaker admitted that all Volkswagen and Audi vehicles with 3.0-liter engines from model years 2009 to 2016 were equipped with the auxiliary equipment and that it failed to disclose this information to the US government as required.
Earlier this month the vehicle giant offered £650 in gift cards and vouchers to customers caught up in emissions cheating scandal in a move which will cost it £313 million. While a violation under U.S. law, the software complies with laws in Europe, she said. He said the company agreed with the agencies to reprogram it “so that the regulators see it, understand it and approve it and feel comfortable with the way it’s performing”.
The Environmental Protection Agency said that officials from the Volkswagen group informed it that technology the EPA says is an illegal “defeat device” was on all model years for the larger engines since 2009, rather than just the 2014-2016 models, as originally reported.
Many VW owners are angry at the automaker and want the manufacturer to buy back their cars.
