Carson tops new poll of Utah voters

Ben Carson is the favorite choice of Utah voters among the Republican presidential candidates, with more than twice the support of national front-runner Donald Trump, according to a new poll.

The results of the poll mirror that of another poll released Wednesday, one conducted by Boston NPR station WBUR. Among Republicans, Carson finished on top with 25 percent support, followed by Rubio at 19 percent, Trump at 17 percent, and Cruz at 14 percent. Rand Paul of Kentucky with 3 percent; and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush with 2 percent.

If Oklahoma’s March 1 primary elections were held today, 27.1 percent of state Republicans say they would vote for Trump.

A recent nationwide survey of likely Republican and Democratic voters conducted by the University of Massachusetts’ political science department shows that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton lead their respective parties.

While the Republican candidates all draw strong favorability ratings among party voters, those numbers are reversed when all registered voters are surveyed. You have Trump at 24 percent, Carson at 20 percent and in the third spot is Rubio at 12 percent with Texas Sen.

GOP backers overwhelmingly picked Carson over Trump for a presidential temperament, but they preferred Trump when it came to tackling key issues, such as terrorism, immigration, and the United States’ complex relationship with Russian Federation and its president Vladimir Putin. Trump has a favorable rating of just 41% among all Florida voters, while 51% have an unfavorable impression of him.

All the candidates remain below 50 percent in the hypothetical matchups tested in this battleground state.

FAU last polled GOP voters back in September, and stood out back then for showing Rubio at second place in the state.

Even so, the Republican Party of Florida jumped at the chance to needle the Democratic front-runner. Clinton controls almost half of the Democrat primary vote, 46.6 percent, according to the poll.

And in a head-to-head matchup with his closest rival Ben Carson, Trump bests the retired neurosurgeon on his ability to address the problems facing the country and to “get things done”. The margin of error is +/- 5.1 percent. The Democratic results are based on 374 Democrats or independents who lean Democratic.

But a majority – 55 percent – took a different view, saying either that these people should be allowed legal status to live and work here, or that they should be given a path to citizenship.
