White House holds call with governors on Syrian refugees

After the attacks in Paris, more than half of the governors in the US have raised concerns about the relocation of refugees into their states.

Matt Swenson, spokesman for Minnesota Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton, said he was reassured that no refugee resettlement initiative is underway “at this time” in the state.

Jack Dalrymple joined fellow Republican Govs. Refugees already face a vetting process of up to two years before they are admitted to the country.

Obama and administration officials have lambasted Republicans, saying they are equating refugees with terrorists. On Tuesday, White House officials hosted a call with 34 governors to better explain current security screening measures.

But McCaul argued that additional security is needed, particularly after the terrorist attacks in Paris.

“They could attempt to cease working with the federal refugee resettlement program”. All but one are Republican, and a few – such as Ohio’s John Kasich and New Jersey’s Chris Christie – are presidential candidates.

Governor Rick Snyder of MI said he was suspending the acceptance of new arrivals until after a review.

“Federal officials also made it clear that there is a lot of misinformation about the type of people who are fleeing from persecution”, the statement reads.

“We hope it never comes to that, but theoretically, they could say, ‘No”. She says the State Department notifies them how many people will be sent to its site.

In a letter signed by eight members of Illinois’ delegation in the nation’s capital, the group called on President Obama to cease the flow of Syrian and Iraqi refugees into the US until there is an updated system in place that can verify the background of the refugees and provide “absolute certainty” that no individual with sympathies to the Islamic State is allowed into the country. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, Mr. Obama said a few of the same people who have suggested stopping refugees from coming into the country also have suggested that they are tough enough to just stare down Russian President Vladimir Putin.
