Notre Dame freshman RB Josh Adams carried the ball 17 times for 141 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 28-7 win over Wake Forest.

For the most part, head coach Brian Kelly’s Irish have been praised for starting quarterback DeShone Kizer’s development, the play of junior wideout Will Fuller, and senior C.J. Prosise’s relatively instant success in the backfield. The over/under for this game is 51 total points. We know he’s down. “It goes to show that we’re deep at all positions. We find ways to lose”.

His rise has been a godsend to a Notre Dame defense that has otherwise struggled to slow down opposing offenses. My favorite was the way he disposed of the final defender in his way with an nearly dismissive stiff-arm.

A 6-foot-1, 212-pound freshman, Adams’ 98-yard TD run is also the longest play from scrimmage in the nation this season, topping the previous longest play, which was a 95-yard TD run by Hawaii’s Paul Davis against UC Davis on September 19. Notre Dame usually gets off to a quick start in games, averaging 10.2 points in the first quarter.

“It’s one of those things where he came onto campus as a 17-year-old that just really was a raw player”, Kelly said. “Just a terrific run when we’re backed up like that”. With the loss the Deacons fall to 3-7 on the season and 2-3 on the road. The goal seemed to spur Wake Forest back into motion, as the Demon Deacons dominated the remaining 18 minutes but were unable to convert any of their chances. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound sophomore sprinted left for his second rushing score of the game and his eighth of the season.

Sure, that’s the focus within the Notre Dame locker room, especially as underclassmen like Kizer see their senior teammates cherishing one last game-and win-inside their home stadium. He has also thrown for 907 yards, 3 TDs and 5 INTs, but he has only completed 51% of his passes.

“A big part of our game plan was that we did not want Fuller to beat us”, Clawson said. “But we weren’t going to push it. So yeah, we felt like we would have him for next week”. The Irish are now 8-1 on the season, with their sole loss coming at No. 1 Clemson.

His 27 combined touchdown grabs in 2014 and 2015 account for 54-percent of Notre Dame’s total (50) in that department. On the next drive for Wake Forest, QB Jake Wolford was getting sacked by Sheldon Day, and the ball slipped out of his hand and right into the hands of Andrew Trumbetti, who ran it 28 yards for the pick six.
