Early Season Snow Storm Coming to Area Today

In the southern Wisconsin town of Janesville, between 10 and 20 inches of snow had fallen by Saturday afternoon. Periods of heavy snow will reduce visibility and freezing conditions will make wet and snow-covered roads slippery. Gusty north winds this afternoon and tonight could create blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibilities.

This means light to moderate snow, mixed with rain, is expected throughout the day.

The National Weather Service-Lincoln in conjunction with the IL Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross has released a free 10-page winter weather preparedness guide, which is now available as a PDF file on the NWS website. Snow is most likely to begin falling at about 9 p.m. Friday and continue until about 11 a.m. Saturday.

Winter storm watches are posted for much of Lower MI and extreme northern IN, including Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing.

Once the snow stops, we are in for our coldest weekend of the season so far. Widespread amounts of 4 to 8 inches of snow expected from Nebraska to MI with up to a foot in isolated spots. The rain will freeze and change over to snow as temperatures plummet during the night hours.

Jason explains, “Well as Robyn knows snow forecasting can be hard because we have lots of different models to look at”.

The first winter storm with accumulating snow is now headed our way.

There may be an inch or two of additional snowfall before the end of the day, according to the National Weather Service, but the majority of the storm has already tapered off.

Although there is a few uncertainty as to the track of the storm, the snowfall totals up to or “in excess of” 5 inches is possible in a few places in southeast MI.
