Alabama’s unemployment rate drops for October

Indiana’s 4.4 percent October unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since August 2001, according to data released today by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted October unemployment rate is 5.9 percent, down from September’s rate of 6 percent, according to an announcement this morning by Gov. Robert Bentley’s office.

Job growth was shown to be up by a few 20,000 jobs in October.

The mining sector, which includes energy jobs, shed 600 jobs in October.

Alabama is still well above the national unemployment rate of 5 percent, but the improvement in Alabama followed a national trend.

The three biggest counties in the metro area also saw their lowest rates in years: Orange County’s rate was 4.5 percent, down from 4.8 in September and down from 5.4 percent a year ago.

The director for the University of Arkansas Center for Business and Economic Research Kathy Deck said other key sectors like construction are performing well (up 8,200 since October 2014) but despite a good month the state is lagging behind in manufacturing.

In October 2015, the Palm Bay‐Melbourne‐Titusville metro area had the second‐fastest annual job growth rate in education and health services (+6.8 percent) of all Florida metro areas.

Overall, the two sectors tend to be filled with white-collar, higher-paying jobs, Kaza said.

The unemployment rate in Orange County moved up slightly in October despite an increase in local jobs.

State Democrats said Hoosiers deserve higher wages in the new jobs being created.

There were 75,000 Mississippians unemployed in October, down 2,000 from September and 14,000 below October 2014.

Compared to October 2014, Arkansas’ nonfarm payroll employment is up 19,700. That was the worst showing of any of the state’s labor markets and was in stark contrast to Fairfield County, which added 1,400 jobs. The over-the-year percentage decreases occurred in North Dakota (-2.1 percent), West Virginia (-1.8 percent), and Louisiana (-0.5 percent).

Texas unemployment rose in October to 4.4 percent
