Vardy scores for 10th straight EPL game to tie record

Van Nistelrooy took to social media on Friday to wish Vardy well – a gesture that meant a lot to the former Fleetwood Town man.

Newcastle – unchanged from their 1-0 win over Bournemouth – failed to deal with an Albrighton corner and the loose ball dropped to the England worldwide, but his effort was well blocked.

Vardy threatened for the first time when Riyad Mahrez skipped beyond Vurnon Anita and found his team-mate six yards out.

The defeat was compounded by the groin injury suffered by Cheick Tiote, who is now facing a spell on the sidelines.

The 28-year-old Vardy, who only scored four league goals last season, cut inside Moussa Sissoko to give Leicester a 1-0 lead. Weak defending from Chancel Mbemba allowed him a free shot at goal but the woodwork came to Elliot’s rescue.

Vardy told presenter Gary Lineker after the game, which resulted in Leicester going clear at the top of the Premier League, that he would be “working hard on the training field” as he goes in search of goal number 11.

Jamie Vardy’s injury time strike against Newcastle has leveled the Premier League record of most goals scored in consecutive games.

The 28-year-old, who was still playing non-league football with Fleetwood in 2012, added: “My feet are on the ground”.

Georginio Wijnaldum had had a second-half header stopped on the line, but chances were few and far between for United.

The French national anthem was played before all eight Premier League games to honor the 130 people killed in the Paris attacks, with England’s top division resuming after the worldwide break amid tightened security.

Vardy joined Van Nistelrooy in scoring in 10 Premier League fixtures in a row after exchanging passes with Leonardo Ulloa and firing home at the near post.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Tobias Schweinsteiger, the brother of Manchester United midfielder Bastian, has tweeted a message of support for Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

Newcastle were bad and Jamie Vardy could and should have had a hat-trick, rather than just the one goal he did get.
