Roma miss chance to go top as Bologna snatch point

Roma made the short trip north only one point off leaders Fiorentina and second-placed Inter Milan and looking to maintain their title push and glean a few confidence ahead of Tuesday’s clash in Spain.

Roma missed the opportunity to go top of Serie A as Mattia Destro’s late penalty helped Bologna escape with a 2-2 draw at home on Saturday evening.

But Vassilis Torosidis’ reckless challenge on Sunderland loanee Emanuele Giaccherini gave former Roma forward Destro the opportunity to haunt his old club from the penalty spot.

That was one of three penalties on a waterlogged pitch in Bologna, with Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko scoring from the spot for Roma in the second half. “There was little football to see tonight, how could there be in these conditions?”

“The positive thing is that we didn’t suffer any injury”.

Destro stepped up to beat Wojciech Szczesny in the Roma goal, incensing the visitors further when he spent most of the remaining two minutes celebrating his leveller. Milan’s 16-year-old keeper had been the game’s outstanding player, saving a long-range shot from Claudio Marchisio and a deflected Hernanes free kick in the first half, and blocking a Paul Pogba effort from nearly 40 metres on the hour.

“Hopefully we’ll get a good result on Wednesday against Manchester City (in the Champions League) too”.
