Canelo Alvarez outslugs Miguel Cotto to win middleweight title

Serving as the major backdrop for the Canelo-Cotto fight is the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry in boxing with the fighters slugging it out for South American supremacy and reliving the memorable bouts between the two nations in the past. According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) will earn a purse of $15 million, and Alvarez’s official purse is $5 million. In this case it was Mandalay Bay’s Events Center, which was the scene of Felix Trinidad’s escape over Oscar De La Hoya in 1999, a decision that had Bob Arum fuming and had Don King strutting around the building yelling “Viva Puerto Rico!”

The fight generated a lot of buzz and was promoted as the opposite of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao bout that seemed to turn off fans. Canal Space has the fight for Latin America, with RPC 4 in Panama also airing the show.

At the end of the day it’s a good move because why not fight both instead of just one. “I am proud of him, proud of his simplicity to admit that we were once no one and now he is the middleweight champion”.

Cotto vs Alvarez match Saturday is going to be ferocious. While Cotto couldn’t seem to back Canelo down at any point, Alvarez could hurt Cotto, and did so a few times.

“We thought it was much closer than the scorecard showed”, Roach said. Canelo Alvarez will rely mostly on his youth and physical tenacity while Cotto expects that his experience and knockout power will be enough to seal the win. Alvarez has had trouble cutting off the ring and we all know that along with Cotto’s devastating body punching ability and desire to bang it out, he knows how to use the ring to his advantage.

Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez 2015 predictions and odds: Why Cotto remains the favorite? I’ve got a great trainer and he’s the one who brought me here from nothing. “This will be another chapter in my career and I will be ready for him”.

Now that Alvarez has beaten Cotto to win the WBC middleweight title (vacated by Cotto before the fight by refusing to pay sanctioning fees), fans will celebrate tonight, then begin clamoring for Alvarez to face the man most consider the de factor if not the linear middleweight champion, Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin. The punch stats reflected that: Canelo was credited with landing 155 of his 484 punches (32%) while Cotto hit Canelo with 129 of the 629 punches he threw (21%), according to CompuBox.

Alvarez backed Cotto up with a left hook with a minute left but took a right hand moments later. Occasionally Cotto would stay inside with Alvarez and endure a ferocious exchange with the Mexican fighter. “I have respect for him, but if we do fight it’s going to be at my weight class. I’m the champion, I don’t have to do what he wants”.

“I don’t need a title”, Cotto said. “Our goal is to win the fight”. Others, more grounded, feel that Golden Boy wouldn’t want to risk its only marketable fighter, its “Golden Goose”, against someone as risky as Golovkin.
