HOME GAME: Davis Love III has lived at Sea Island since he was 13 and raised his family in the Golden Isles. The junior at Alabama played the final seven holes at Plantation in seven over, closing with a pair of double bogeys for a 42 on the front nine and a 76 to miss the cut.
Those belonged mainly to dad.
“If I keep hitting the ball the way I am, I just need to hole a few putts”, he said. But he bogeyed there, got mad, swung really hard at the next one trying knock it on in two and made another bogey.
David Lingmerth (Arkansas Razorbacks) had three birdies and four bogeys for a 1-over 73 and a two-round total of 3-under 139.
Pebble Beach Invitational: Kim Welch shot a 5-under 67 at Pebble Beach to take a one-stroke lead over four men after the first round. That gave him a 6-under 64 and a three-shot lead over Kevin Chappell.
Kisner fired the low round of the day and his PGA career to grab his first solo 54-hole PGA lead, starting with a six-foot birdie putt at the fifth and a seven-footer at the eighth.
“Beat my dad”, he said.
THE CUT: With a strong wind keeping down scores, 87 players made the cut at 2-under 140. “I got my tee out and picked the ball up to clean it”, said McDowell. I’ll try to be more patient.
“After I birdied the first hole, my expectations were a little high”, he said. The 18-year-old New Zealander She remains in control of year-end honors, such as player of the year, the scoring title and a $1 million bonus.
Making it easier for Dru Love was having Justin Thomas along for the ride.
Tournament host Davis Love III attracted plenty of attention as he was able to experience his 21-year-old son Dru’s maiden PGA Tour round at close quarters.
Kisner had done everything but win this year.
What it means: Kisner has four runner-up finishes this year, including a second-place finish in China in his most recent start, but he distanced himself from the field Saturday with a 64. “I always rate myself on that”, Kisner said. “I’ve just gotten beaten a few times, so hopefully I’ll have a chance coming down with a couple-shot lead on Sunday”.
