Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized on Tuesday the way the U.S.-backed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal is being arranged, saying the “clandestine talks” do not promote stability in Asia Pacific.

He said the government should not be overly concerned about losing markets if it chose to shun the TPP, adding that investment and imports from the U.S. were stable.

“Our focus right now is getting it ratified and implemented by the 12”, he said.

“Imagine the schools and hospitals and roads and bridges that could be built with that money – investments that would make countries more competitive and more prosperous”, Obama said.

Besides Japan, Vilsack cited Vietnam and Malaysia as markets where TPP tariff reductions would help USA exporters of meat, nuts and other products.

The 12 countries had reached an agreement on the TPP on Oct 5 in Atlanta, the USA, concluding the negotiations which began in 2010. However, before the trade pact can be implemented, it has to be passed by the U.S. congress and other national assemblies.
