OH students in Rhodes Scholars’ Class of 2016

Famous Rhodes Scholars include U.S. Senator Cory Booker, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal and news anchor Rachel Maddow. She is president of the Northeastern chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, and a violist in her university’s symphony orchestra.

According to the press release, Mediate, a native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, majored in Africana studies and pre-health during her time at Notre Dame.

Out of 869 American students endorsed by their universities for the scholarship, only 32 won the final prize – an acceptance rate of less than four percent. The scholarships cover two or three years of study and are worth about $50,000 per year.

“Jay and Laura are outstanding scholars, but more importantly, such wonderful people”, said Alexander Hartemink, the faculty director of the Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows.

“I’m shocked and overwhelmed right now”, Wheeler said.

Roberts has researched the religious roles of women during the 16th-century English Reformation, when the Church of England broke from the Catholic Church.

“I’m extremely grateful to have received this honor”, he said.

Ding is considering a career in the foreign service, and plans to pursue a master’s degree in worldwide relations at Oxford. Officials say Makhmudov is pursuing a master’s of public policy. “I couldn’t believe it when they announced it. I’m still trying to process it”. He is also a member of Duke’s NCAA Division I varsity cross-country and track team.
