Syracuse fires head coach Scott Shafer

A source confirmed the report to syracuse.com and another source has said players are being called in to a meeting. It became clear to Coyle quickly that Shafer was not the coach to lead Syracuse to that territory.

Scott Shafer, who is 13-23 in his three seasons as coach of the Syracuse Orange, will be dismissed after Saturday’s season finale, the school announced Monday.

Syracuse (3-8) is mired in an eight-game losing streak, and the team has lost by 10 points or more in all but two of those games. Scott has worked tirelessly to educate our students on and off the field and to build our program. The Orange went 3-9 last year under Shafer a year after winning the Texas Bowl. However, I feel a change in leadership is needed at this time. “A national search will begin immediately”.

His defense, once a Shafer calling card, has fallen off, as well.

The 48-year-old former quarterback at OH was defensive coordinator at MI in 2008 and then served as an assistant under Marrone.

He lasted only the 2007 season before being hired away by Rich Rodriguez at MI, but resigned after one subpar season with the Wolverines.

Shafer was promoted from defensive coordinator in January 2013 after Doug Marrone left Syracuse to take the head coaching job with the Buffalo Bills.
