Opera Max Now Also Helps You Save Data While Streaming Music

Neither Spotify or Google Play Music, the two biggest players in the Android music streaming market, or Deezer, a European service that is gaining traction, are now supported, however.

One month after introducing video savings for YouTube and Netflix apps, Opera Max, in its latest version, now offers data saving on music apps including YouTube Music, Pandora, Slacker Radio, Gaana and Saavn.

Opera claims that data compression is indeed the way ahead for countries like India where 97.4 million people in urban areas listen to music online. These include phones from Acer, Cherry Mobile, Evercoss, Fly, Hisense, Mobiistar, Micromax, Oppo, Prestigio, Samsung, Symphony, TWZ, Tecno, and Xiaomi. The JuxtSmartMandate study also pointed out that listening to online music is the third-most preferred activity, followed by mail and social media. Opera, the company behind the popular browser for Android devices as well as desktop, has announced a new feature for their Opera Max app that allows users to save on data consumption for music streaming.

You might be wondering how it optimizes the content. Well, this app uses the rocket optimizer technology to compress the audio traffic, which is the same thing done on video optimization of YouTube and Netflix content. And remember, it would affect the quality of the content. The technology can deliver high audio quality content over a low bitrate connection; it supports both MP3 and MP4 formats, as well as it can convert the streams to the more efficient AAC+ codec.

“More and more people love listening to their favorite music with apps; however, these apps are among the major data hogs consuming users’ mobile data quickly”, says Sergey Lossev, Product Manager at Opera Software. However let’s not forget that music streaming takes up data too, and Opera Max will help you with that.

While Opera is best known for its browsers, the company has recently put quite a bit of effort into its Opera Max data-saving app for Android.

We have added audio compression for these music apps so that people will feel free to stream music without having to look constantly for available, free WiFi coverage. Now it seems that a few more services are joining the ranks: the newly released YouTube Music and the India-focused Saavn and Gaana. You can monitor and keep count of how much mobile data or Wi-Fi these apps have been using as well as how much you have saved by enabling the service.
