McKnight says a funeral for her cousin Jamar Clark has been scheduled for Wednesday at Shiloh Temple global in Minneapolis.
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said in a statement Saturday night that he had met with Clark’s family and community leaders and expressed his sympathy. Little has been released about the incident, and authorities say videos will not be released because they could “taint” witness testimony they have yet to obtain. The events are open to the public and to the media.
Protesters are demanding to see video of the shooting.
U.S. Rep Keith Ellison said he was upset with a police officer who he believes pointed a gun at his son, Jeremiah, during the protests. An encampment of protesters outside a Minneapolis police station vowed Saturday to maintain their vigil ov…
Both officers involved in the shooting, Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze, have been placed on standard administrative leave.
And at 4 p.m. Sunday, Black Lives Matter is holding a meeting for the community to “discuss moving forward”, the group’s Facebook page says, adding: “A lot has happened in the last week and we want to go over our wins, statement/promises of the governor, next steps of the occupation”. People who say they were at the scene have said the 24-year-old Clark was handcuffed when he was shot, but police have disputed that.
That will be part of the Department of Justice’s investigation, and attorneys for the agency are expected to arrive in Minnesota Sunday, reports note.
One family member said he was shot “in the head, execution style”. Earlier this year, he was convicted of a felony count of terroristic threats and sentenced to 15 months in prison, but his sentence was stayed for five years and he was out on probation. They have marched in the streets and blocked the police headquarters chanting, “arrest the officer or arrest us”.
Four days after the fatal shooting, the Minneapolis police union finally released the names of the two officers involved in the case, satisfying one of the key demands listed by the activists who have been rallying for justice in the case for days.
Clark’s death comes at a time of heightened debate in the United States over police use of lethal force, especially against black people.
Three activists were escorted from a Minneapolis City Council meeting after speaking out about the shooting of a black man by a city police officer.

That investigation will be conducted by the FBI and will continue alongside a separate investigation already being conducted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
