India, Malaysia to enhance defence ties

Kuala Lumpur: Warning that terrorism is the “biggest threat” to the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said it should be delinked from religion as he pitched for new global anti-terror strategies while ensuring that no country gives sanctuary to it, a veiled reference to Pakistan.

The new deal will enable both the countries to reduce incidents of cyber crimes and will help strengthening cyber security by combining Indian and Malaysian resources.

“The Strategic Partnership will broaden and deepen ties across various sectors including defence relations, economic and cultural cooperation, skills development and capacity building”, said Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Prime Minister said that India had shown the rest of world that a country did not need to compromise its moral values and social traditions in pursuit of greater economic growth.

“We expect to counter terrorism and to work closely together to defeat violent extremism and terrorism”, he said.

“This reflects a long standing national consensus in India on the importance of this region for India and the world”, Modi said. As our lives get more networked, this is emerging as one of the most serious concerns of our age.

The government will take necessary steps to recognise more degree programmes from India, especially in information technology (IT) and engineering, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. “We intend to exploit the full potential of our bilateral agreements and the Indian-ASEAN Agreements”.

The two premiers will sign the India-Singapore Strategic Partnership to boost bilateral ties.

India and Malaysia also agreed to discuss further with a view to conclude the signing of a MoU on transfer of sentenced prisoners to each other’s prisons.

As over 15,000 people of Indian origin chanted “Modi, Modi” at the Malaysian global Exhibition and Convention Centre here, the prime minister acknowledged the large proportion of people of Tamil majority among the Indian diaspora in this southeast Asian nation by starting with the greeting, “Vanakkam”.

Razak described thgate as a symbol of India-Malaysia friendship.

“Malaysia is not just business-friendly but also visitor-friendly, and I am sure visitors from India will soon feel at home here”, he added.
