Supergirl Episode 5 Recap: Can A Superhero Have It All?
It’s unavoidable. In fact, it’s one of the show’s strengths. It lets us examine a very familiar story through the lens of a less familiar character. After all, does Kara really think James will inevitably choose Lucy over Supergirl? He’s clearly infatuated with her, which entertains Kara.

Anyway, tonight Alex tells Kara she can trust Henshaw and the DEO. She’s exactly the cosmopolitan woman that Kara wishes she were.
The only other major player missing from the Superman mythos is Lex Luthor, the criminal mastermind whose greed and ambition is only matched by his jealousy for Superman. Supergirl flies around in the skies only to find a suspicious-looking drone which she promptly chases after and destroys. The building that was attacked was actually one of his subsidiaries so technically he would have been destroying his own property. It’s entirely too convenient, and he’s entirely too glib, for that to be true.
“I prefer not to rely on the government to solve my problems”. Not only is there a big media event that the company is covering in Cat’s absence – leaving Kara with a lot of professional responsibility – but a disgruntled ex-employee of Maxwell Lord is planting bombs around National City.
Meanwhile, Kara has to witness James and Lucy fully back together while she continues to pine away for him silently and Winn is doing the same for her. Kara overhears them having an intense conversation in the restaurant by work and lends James an ear once their meal is over.
This week the show gets Anne-Marie Slaughtered: Can Supergirl have it all?
Kara discovers that she’s being watched by drones again and immediately accuses the DEO of spying just like they did when she first revealed herself to the world. She is, objectively, superior to Lucy. Now Lucy is added to the mix of a concoction that wasn’t really all that interesting in the first place. For a show that so frequently parades its feminist bona fides, one of the strongest feminist moments so far has been Lucy and Kara’s mutual respect for one another, which includes a bit of admiring jealousy but never even hints at cattiness.
The whole scene has a nicely done Superman/Lex Luthor vibe to it, meaning it’ll be interesting to see where they go with this relationship in the future. Alex is placed on his detail, but despite the obvious threat on his life, he insists on moving forward with the unveil of his new Super Rail transit system that’s debuting tonight. Hank explains that there’s footage of the bomber, a man named Ethan Knox.
The hit superhero drama TV series from CBS, “Supergirl”, will be returning with the episode that should have been aired last week. She wakes up at the DEO and sees Henshaw staring at her, his eyes growing that nasty red, but falls back asleep.
“At a few point, even the Girl of Steel might break”. The episode is titled “How Does She Do It?”. But she didn’t get the bad guy. She is also intelligent, powerful, has a great heart, etc. Throughout the episode, we see Kara anxious that she has spread herself too thin. You can’t do it all, Cat says. At least, not yet.
This episode focuses a lot on whether or not James and Lucy will rekindle their relationship. If you missed it, we have a full and detailed recap right here for you. This is all an elaborate test of character or something, like when Yoda was messing with Luke on Dagobah?
– Also, we’re pretty sure Maxwell Lord is Carter’s dad, right? It’s not that there’s no room for romance in a Supergirl show, it’s that I want the romance to be more compelling and less cookie-cutter. Kara’s opening flight sequence was really spectacular, as was the first bomb rescue. James says she wants to “win” everything.
Cat tells Kara that Carter is special – he is gifted, but shy, and he needs special attention. Before they can go too much more in-depth, a bomb goes off and Kara has to go save a skyscraper. I’m much more interested in seeing the characters fleshed out than I am in the prospect of watching them all mope at each other about their grade school crushes.
Now that I’ve got all that out of the way, though, I still generall enjoyed things this week. “I don’t care what kind, as long as it has a cheeseburger on top”. And he wanted any clue about her civilian identity. “Like me”, she whispers. You can have it all, you just have to take your time.
“My mom says it’s okay to be a nerd”.
“I forget to send it. I’m sorry”. As a babysitter, I think a baseline is probably “Don’t blow up my son”, and that’s a line Kara barely cleared. “You eat cereal for dinner and your desk is covered with toys”. He then calls Kara to let her know, and she circles back to the train station. Your name is ironic. “Every day, kid.” Winn, buddy.
“How do you juggle it all? How does she do it?”.
