“Any decision on Syria should be implemented with the consent of the Syrian people and rulers”, Khamenei’s press service quoted him as saying.
In this photo released by an official website of the office of the Iranian supreme leader, Russian President Vladimir Putin smiles during his meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran, Iran on Monday, November 23, 2015. “Only the Syrian people can decide this”.
“No one from the outside can and no one should impose upon the Syrian people any sort of form of rule, or impose who personally should run this”, Putin said during the meeting with Khamenei, as shown on Russian Federation state television.
Putin stood alongside Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani at the opening of the gas summit, attended also by counterparts Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela, Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria and Evo Morales of Bolivia. Representatives from several Russian companies have held talks in Iran in the run-up to Putin’s visit and negotiations are continuing, Mehdi Sanaei, the Iranian ambassador to Russia, told Etemad.
“The United states is trying to achieve its failed military objectives in Syria now through political means”, he added, referring to proposed peace talks to end the civil war in Syria.
He also reiterated the opposition stance that there could be no peaceful solution in Syria without the removal of Assad.
Russian Federation launched its air campaign on September 30 purporting to strike at terrorist targets as ISIL made gains in the country.
Khamenei said the U.S. had a “long-term plan” to dominate Syria and the Middle East which would “disadvantage all countries, especially Iran and Russia”.
Iran insists that all its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes, a claim that Russian Federation says it believes.
