Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings shouts to his team in the first half during an NCAA college basketball game against St. John’s in the first round of the Maui Invitational Monday, November 23, 2015, in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Mullin and the Red Storm opened play in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, and somehow, Bill Walton opening the broadcast by playing a drum to background a few hula dancers and following it up by wearing sunglasses indoors was not the strangest thing we saw.
St. John’s is coming off a thrilling 16-point comeback win over Rutgers on Thursday at Carnesecca Arena as part of the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games, a series between the BIG EAST and Big Ten named in honor of Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary Dave Gavitt.
Wing man Jeff Roberson, a sophomore, recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds and 11 points.
The Red Storm shot only 30 percent from the field and were led by Federico Mussini, who scored 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting and showed great promise attacking the rim.
Vanderbilt forward Luke Kornet led his unit with 13 points. 12 of the 14 players that stepped on the court for Vanderbilt scored and six of those players finished with at least nine points. It’s the second time this season that the Commodores have entered the 90-point threshold, having done so against Gardner Webb last Monday.
Stallings responded to questions concerning St. John’s.
Vanderbilt’s subs outscoried St. John’s 26-0 in the first half. How do we come back from this?
The Johnnies got jumped at the Maui Invitational Monday morning in Hawaii, and Vanderbilt never let them up from the ground.
The ‘Dores weren’t as crisp in the second half, but they didn’t have to be. He picked up a couple more fouls, and I took him out. I didn’t have to, but I took him out.
“I think their length is what bothered us”. That was the best team we played against. But based on the stats, it looks like they’re a fast team that likes to chuck up three-pointers and doesn’t worry too much about defending. “We had a lot of people play well and we shot the ball well”.

“Again, three games in three days is a challenge, especially against this quality of competition”, Stallings said.
